The Centre currently has a class for young children who are severely hearing impaired, located within the Communication section. The language of instruction here is English and an Auditory-Verbal approach is employed which teaches  children to maximise the hearing that they have through active listening. The class follows the framework of the British Curriculum and children participate in  individual sessions that focus on listening, speech production and auditory perception. In order to participate effectively in this auditory-verbal classroom it is essential that hearing aides are maintained to the highest standards. Signing is used to support the introduction of new learning but the focus of the class is speaking and listening. The speech-language therapist works alongside the teacher to support the children\'s auditory verbal development.
